Manuel Antonio
Overview
Manuel Antonio is a very popular vacation destination both for domestic and international travelers. It’s located about three hours south of Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose. Before you arrive, you will pass through the famous fishing town Quepos where sportfishing is a big thing. The 10-minute drive from Quepos is hilly and offers many beautiful panoramic views for taking photos. Many of the hotels in Manuel Antonio are located in the hills with these breathtaking views. After this scenic drive you’ll arrive at the town’s white sand main beach. The beach offers different kinds of activities, sun beds, and food and drink services. There are a few nice restaurants and shops by the boardwalk, and the entrance to the town’s national park is just a few hundred yards from the beach.
The national park itself is definitely worth a visit while you are in Manuel Antonio. It’s open every day except Mondays, and we’ll help you book a tour with a great professional bilingual guide. The guide will walk the mile-long trails in the park with you and explain everything about the tropical rainforest and all the animals that live here. Mammals that can be seen here are all four species of monkeys in Costa Rica; red-backed squirrel monkey (only found here and in Corcovado), white-faced capuchin, spider, and mantled howler monkey. Two- and three-toed sloths are found here as well as raccoons and white-noced coatis (pizotes). There are more than 350 species of birds and several reptiles and amphibians such as iguanas and different types of frogs. The national park has some amazing beaches hidden among the trails for you to discover and enjoy some tanning and swimming.
Besides the beautiful national park and the pristine beaches, Manuel Antonio also offers many great restaurants and bars. There are many local and international restaurants and some offer beachfront seats while others have great ocean views. If you want to go dancing and enjoy a little bit more of the local nightlife, a visit to Quepos could be a good option for you. This area of the Central Pacific offers great fishing. Let us know your preferences and we’ll help you book your fishing charters!
Manuel Antonio is also a great place for surfing. The main beach is perfect for beginners as the waves don’t get too big and boards are available right on the beach. If you are a little bit more experienced and looking for bigger waves, you should check out Playa Biesanz for intermediate surf. If you are looking for stronger waves and currents, the island Playa Isla Damas outside of town is a great spot for you.
