Overview
17 kilometres south of Dominical, you find Uvita one of Costa Rica’s many stunning beaches. Known to be one to be most biologically diverse habitats in the world, this southwestern paradise found on the island gives you some of the best beaches and vistas that you can ever see. With its authentic Costa Rican village experience, this peaceful village with is spreading hills and protect marine reserve makes a sought-after travel hot spot. Hotels and resorts are scattered over the hills nestled within the luscious jungles.
The Marino Ballena National Park marine reserve has become famous for its migrating pods of humpback whales who visit between the months of December and April Humpback, whales migrate here to the warm waters off the coast to mate before returning up north. Make sure you find a change to do a whale watching tour and catch sight of these magnificent sea creatures. While Uvita may not have been a popular destination in the past, tourists have caught wind of the increasingly popular Whale and Dolphin Festival attracts many from all parts of the globe. Another festival that everyone looks forward to country’s biggest hippie gathering, the Envision Festival, basically a smaller version of Burning Man, but at the beach.
Due to the protected national park, fishing and hunting marine life is prohibited in this region but there is an ample amount of other activities to keep you occupied. Swimming and a myriad of water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking and scuba diving to name a few. Horseback riding is also an activity you can try. Take long walks down the coastline enjoying the beautiful landscapes while sunbathing in the warm Caribbean sun. The peace and quiet of this not so crowded beach allows you to enjoy the holiday in the comfort of serenity. While you are visiting this quaint beachside town, take a quick tour of the nearby Caño Island, Violines Island or Ballena Island, and hike to the forests in the mountains. Visit the Uvita Waterfall is a local gem, just five minutes from the centre of the town.
