Poás Volcano

If you are spending a full day or more in the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, this is a great combo tour for you to enjoy. The day consists of three different parts so let´s get going!

After leaving Alajuela City and while climbing upwards the Poás Volcano, we will notice a change in temperature and vegetation; flowers and strawberries are growing along the way and the temperature gets a little bit chillier. The first stop is the Doka Coffee Estate where we are welcomed with a typical breakfast and a tour in a coffee plantation where we learn about the ancient techniques used by the experts to produce one of the best coffees in Costa Rica.

The tour continues to Poás Volcano National Park, for a hike to the lookout point at the impressive main crater. The Poás Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most famous places to visit and it’s known for having one of the world’s biggest volcanic craters. The crater has a circular shape and measures 4,330 feet (1,320 m) and is 1,049 feet (320 m) deep. The edge of the volcano is made of pyroclastic materials such as blocks, bombs, ashes, and 7,540-year-old lava. The crater has a hot and acidic lagoon with temperatures between 68 Fahrenheit (20° C) and 122 Fahrenheit (50 ° C).

Due to its recent activity the total stay at the Poás Volcano National Park will be 40 minutes: 10 minutes walking on the trail to get to the crater viewpoint, 20 minutes at the crater viewpoint, and 10 minutes walking back.
As our last stop of the day, we head on to La Paz Waterfall Gardens to walk on a trail towards spectacular waterfalls in the lush rainforest. This is an astonishing place and experience that will show us many highlights such as the rescue center, the birdhouse, the butterfly garden, monkeys, the hummingbird gallery, the serpentarium, the frogs’ exhibit, and the jungle cats.
During this exciting full day, we´ll also be served breakfast and lunch before we head back to our hotel to have a tasteful dinner on our own.
